PSP Firmware Discussion

Morphieous Says:

Malicious within the release of the PSP, hackers have been going crazy and finally 2.6 has been hacked, are you all for it?

Malicious Says

In a way, with 2.6 Sony brought about the internet Capabilities along with the ability to control just about every aspect of the Internet Browser.

Morphieous Says

But what does that have to do with hacking the PSP?

Malicious Says

Well with the 2.5 and 2.6 Kernel being unlocked anyone using 1.5 has the ability to use the functions built into 2.6 with some simple downloads and installations. Anyone having previously updated now, Thanks to Dark_Alex, can now downgrade with minimal failure, which would result in bricking your PSP making it impossible to undo and stopping you from using anything on the handheld.

Morphieous Says

This is all good, but I think Sony is at loss here. They are being rather immature with the situation and are not being business like.

Malicious Says

Not entirely, if people are downgrading solely for access to homebrewed content Sony will remain unaffected.

Morphieous Says

They can easily switch around this situation and bring out software or in other words their own homebrew. Why don’t they just hire hackers to make the software for them, and in turn sell the programs legally and make it able not to void the warranty of the PSP?

Malicious Says

The whole problem with that is that hackers are rather dedicated, if it is possible that is, they will continue to hack consoles regardless, they may hate the company that they are trying to destroy of they just want to get more out of something already concrete.

Morphieous Says

Sony is a multi million dollar company, they can do as they please. If you look at it from the business point of view they are losing. They bring out new firmware updates which cost money to increase security when they can easily allow hackers to do what they do, or simply give them the license to sell the products or something.

Malicious Says

They could also just as easily turn around and sue the hackers when they find out who they truly are. The licenses works and all but to what extent? Since you are required to download this stuff off the net onto your PSP via the USB Connection, people will hand it out for free no matter which way you turn

Morphieous Says

But why must Sony persist then. If this is the case why don’t they stop spending money on bringing out new firmware when they will be hacked soon enough? It just doesn’t all add up when they can spend money on better things for the PSP, for example a new design?

Malicious Says

They don't really need a new design to begin with, the PSP works and looks fine the way it presently is. They also continue to spend money on firmware updates which a whole lot of people dont even know about the downgrading possibility to begin with and just get the updates for the new features that may have been released and to continue to enjoy the newer games that require information from it

Morphieous Says

All that security is not necessary. The updates should be fine but why stop us from actually having fun on the PSP with homebrew. One of Sony’s enemies is Nintendo and with the use of ROMs does'nt Nintendo lose?

Malicious Says

Well first off the firmware isn't there entirely for security, they bring it out to add new features, not even caring about the homebrew community, which is allowing users to trade content for free where as actual companies have to pay to put stuff on their system. Then there is the reason that people will just buy the system for the homebrew capabilities and they are still making money in the end.

Nintendo on the other hand isn't really losing out on any money since Game cube games are to big to fit on the memory cards even if ripped from their disks. Also they can't exactly emulate a touch screen on the PSP, nor can they pull off 2 screens. The GBA on the other hand is still making a ton of money and I don't think Nintendo is overly worried with the DS out of the gates.

Morphieous Says

That is a reality, although GBA emulation is a big thing as well as N64 emulation along the way. And don’t talk about Game cube in the near future it maybe possible. There is already a 4 gig memory card released for the PSP. So things are looking pretty bright.

Malicious Says

By the time they get Game cube games onto the PSP, the Wii will be out and the problem solved. The N64 isn't that big of a problem as it has reached the end of its life cycle.

Morphieous Says

Okay that is understandable. Now, with concerns to "hacking" the PSP, is it a difficult task to complete?

Malicious Says

“Hacking" the PSP it is quite the simple task, it is a simple matter of placing the correct files in the correct locations on the PSP Memory Stick. A couple of executions later you will be back to version 1.5 with the option of upgrading or emulating the newer versions.

Morphieous Says

There is also word that you can brick your PSP? How does this come about?

Malicious Says

If a file has been wrongly placed or you did a step out of order the possibility of bricking your PSP is rather high. Bricking your PSP refers to the inability to use any of the menus or access any UMD, drawing up a blank screen making your PSP a brick so to speak.

Morphieous Says

That is a high price to pay however.

So downgrading 2.6 is a reality cause you yourself have done it, and have come out successful

Malicious Says

Any type of Firmware tampering voids your warranty and the only way to undo what you have done is with the assistance of a mod chip.

I myself have successfully downgraded my PSP just to prove the technique does in fact work and the PSP is still 100% functional with no damage with the exception of the wrong number being dumped. When you visit the Settings and check the version of Firmware you are running you will see 7.50 instead which has no effect on anything so do not be alarmed if you try this yourself.

Morphieous Says

How long exactly does it take to complete, and is it hard. Because I heard you say that it has an automatic program that puts the files in its correct places/folders

Malicious Says

Fans have created a program which will place all the files in the correct location on the memory stick, which in turns removes any chance of screwing up in the process. The process takes around 10 minutes to complete once all the proper files have been downloaded.

Morphieous Says

You used that program and it works?

Malicious Says

Flawlessly, I must admit I was a little nervous since the process displays a Blank screen where no progress report is displayed so when it reboots you have no idea if you bricked the PSP or not.

Morphieous Says

I would be shaking myself; I mean this is an expensive piece of equipment.

So this final product works for sure we know that, but why do you need to have GTA?

Malicious Says

To be able to access the eloader which is a program you are required to start on the PSP it needs the game GTA Liberty City Stories according to the creator GTA has a security hole in it allowing the eloader to operate properly.

Morphieous Says

GTA always helps us out somehow.

Malicious Says

Well they keep true to their roots, that's for sure.

Morphieous Says

Haha I surely bet.

I have just read something about some version of the PSP that says that if your PSP is a TA-082 don’t downgrade. How can you tell if you have that version?

Malicious Says

Ah yes I forgot to mention that, the PSP TA-802 is a version of the white PSP, to be able to tell if you have it or not, open the UMD Tray and look at the motherboard just under the lip, if it displays a serial number then you most likely have that model.

Morphieous Says

I'm also reading that you have to have upgrade at least once in order to downgrade. What position does that put users who have recently purchased their PSP and got it with 2.6?

Malicious Says

You do not in fact have to have upgraded at least once one of the test subjects downgraded a factory bought PSP earlier today with my assistance.

Morphieous Says

Excellent news, I am glad that things are looking better for the homebrew using community.

The PSP has many capabilities that Sony seems to not want us to use and I know I will be uploading my ROMs soon enough.(Keep That under wraps though:P)

Malicious Says

I will keep you updated on the Hacking community with information based on newer versions

Morphieous Says

That will be fine; also www.psp-hacks.com is a great site for information and homebrew software, if you have not already known. They also have a forum where you can get help from if something goes wrong

Malicious Says

For further instruction on downgrading your PSP I can be contacted via the Forum

Morphieous Says

I doubt anyone would have the need to contact you since you will be providing a in depth tutorial on how to downgrade.

Well Malicious thank you for the time, and telling me all about running homebrew on my 2.6 Firmware PSP, maybe in the future 2.7 will be hacked

Malicious Says

Quicker than you know

Morphieous Says

And we will be here to cover that story when the time comes, goodnight, and thank you again for your time.
