Introduction

The human colonists have come under attack by 2 alien species, the Zerg and the Protoss. The Terran Dominion has been charged with their protection. You can play as any one of the above species creating massive armies and taking on up 7 other players at any given time. StarCraft back in the day for both the N64 and PC were or should I say still are one of the greatest games to ever be released. I can be found online time to time, surprisingly there are still on average 100,000+ players still in the starcraft rooms.

Gameplay

This is where things get interesting, especially if you play online. You can play through 1 of 6 campaigns when you first load the game provided you have the expansion which you can purchase rather cheap just about anywhere. Each species has their own specific units some more experienced than others allowing for invisibility, mind control and the best of all the ability to nuke.

The Terran are quick builders, have weak structures, but the ability to lift off just about your entire base and transport by air to any new location that fits your needs whether you’ve ran out of minerals, gas or are under attack. The units are quite powerful if combined with other units, by themselves they are rather vulnerable.

Zerg are a weird bunch, you can only build your bases on a compound created by the hatchery called creep which spreads along the ground as more building are grown on your territory. The best part about having living buildings allows them to heal themselves as time goes on. The units are pretty strong and the ability to burrow under ground makes them tougher to deal with since you won’t be able to attack anything underground as easily as it sounds.

Protoss being the toughest when it comes to buildings, each being protected by a shield. The units are weak when you first start out not giving you much for options until you have some of the more advanced structures completed allowing you to make invisible units. All the while you can protect yourself with Photon Cannons which are perfect for defense, unless you’re playing against Terran and they are wielding Battle Cruisers.

Online play has a bunch of special game modes, such as Cannon Defense where you are allowed to stack photon cannons atop one another and try to stop a slew of enemies from reaching the end goal, once to many make it through you lose. You can also play Arkon tag, where you are given a probe from protoss and you must run around avoiding the arkon as it can send you to the center of the arena where you must wait for another player to free you from the jail. You can also toss up buildings to slow down the Arkon from tagging you. If your looking to kill some time playing basic games online, this is recommended.

Graphics

Taking into consideration how long ago StarCraft was created, the graphics to this date are still good; they give off the feel of the war that is being waged across the galaxy. Each unit has their own look to them and they resemble their purpose for example tanks look capable of taking out massive amounts of enemies rather than a box with a pea shooter on it only capable of denting cardboard.

Sound

Well there are a lot of screams, grunts, pleas, and insults; yes insults, those nasty marines get a little peeved when you click on them enough times and begin to question if you’re truly retarded. I believed so at one point in time, but a quick overview of who was actually calling me retarded just made me feel a little stupid. The aliens all make rather odd sounds, but who cares as long as you can mimic them like I can…..Hello? We all know you love to copy the creatures in the game. “Adun Torivus.”

Overall

StarCraft is still to this day one of my all time favourite games for the PC. I suggest you purchase this game and then let me know and I will meet you online for some war. Online play is where the game pulls itself together since the available game modes are endless, best of all you can play with Dial Up and not have to worry about slowing down the game any. Make sure to check out StarCraft for your computer.
